Newborn Session with Baby D ~ Connecticut Photographer

Our story with Jim & Keri began almost five years ago to the day. Jim had reached out with the loveliest email, asking  whether we would be available to photograph him asking his then girlfriend, Keri, to marry him, while they were visiting their favorite place…Cape Cod the week before Thanksgiving. Despite our 11+ years of photographing hundreds of weddings and countless engagement sessions, we hadn’t before then documented a real life pop-the-question, proposal.

Needless to say, we jumped at the chance, and with each new conversation with Jim, I became more smitten. He really is one of the sweetest guys on the planet. And, the way he loves Keri…well, let’s just say, she is one lucky gal!! Jim & I spoke several times, planning out all the details to his exacting and romantic standards. We had a lot of fun and when the day came, it was everything I knew it would be for him and more! Keri, of course, said “Yes!” and so their love story embarked on a new and happy chapter.

Keri & Jim live in Connecticut, so we figured the wedding would be there…still, we held our collective breath that they might want us to be a part of that too. And, happily, they did. We got together again with them the following May, for their engagement session, which was again held here on the Cape. Then, in September of 2015, they said, “I do!” surrounded by family & friends at the stunning Branford House in Mystic Connecticut.

We were there for all of it, every happy, love-filled minute.

When they announced they were pregnant earlier this year, Jim reached out again about having me take some newborn photos. I can’t really express how happy this question makes me. For starters, Andy & I don’t have any kids of our own, but we LOVE them!! And babies make me go all gooey inside. I feel my maternal instincts go into overdrive. The smell of them makes my hormones go wacky and I feel a kind of regret I don’t like to feel, but that’s hard to escape in their presence. Mostly, though…there’s just lots of love. A calm, beautiful, this-is-what-it’s-all-about kind of love.

Getting asked to document the earliest days in the new life one of our wedding couples has created also brings me such a sense of gratitude…..that wonderful couples like Keri & Jim want to keep us in their lives and want US to be the ones documenting the person most special to them in the whole world. Well, there really is no better endorsement, no greater gesture of love & trust and it reminds me why I got into photography in the first place.

It’s all about relationships for me….building them, witnessing them, documenting them and nurturing them. And, I feel so blessed to still be doing so 16 years later.

Jim & Keri have been wickedly patient waiting for these photos, which took longer to get to than I either care to admit or than was promised, so I think it’s time to stop blathering on and just get to the good stuff. Without further ado….I present to you Day 9 in the life of sweet Baby D, starting with a sweet corner in the nursery and a portrait of Jim & Keri’s first baby (furbaby), Brewster.

Waking up from a nap to greet me….eyes full of wonder and a head of hair like you read about! Hello sunshine!

The whole family gathers as it’s time for a feeding. Love these in between moments!

Food coma setting in and our happy new mom & dad transfixed by their wee little man.

It’s amazing to me how quickly babies grow and change. Perhaps it’s easy for me to say that, from the comfort of never having experienced the sleep depravation of parenthood, but still….one minute their these wee little love nuggets who do nothing but eat, poop and sleep….and cry when one of those needs isn’t being tended to to their liking. And, then the next minute they’re smiling and crawling and babbling in a way they only understand, looking like a completely different person. It’s just the coolest.

Love the way Jim is looking at Keri in this next one…not sure who he’s more smitten with…his wife or his new son! Just as it should be!

Perfection….from the swollen baby eyes and little back wrinkles to the perfect baby skin…Just heavenly!

I mean….is there anything better than a sleeping little nugget of love? I think not!

Just so yummy!

Sleep my beauty….sleep.

Kisses from momma….Mmmmm good!

A little quiet time with Dadda, in his favorite chair. Heaven lives here.

So much has changed since we met these two lovely people, they got married, built a new house and had a baby. But, their love remains the same. So happy for these two!

Love is this….having a best friend and partner and multiplying that love to infinity and beyond with a new baby. Just the bestest!!!

These sweet little feet will carry you as long & far as you dare to dream! May they also dance and leap and feel the joy of sand between your toes until they are old and wrinkled, with lines as deep as those you carved in my heart! Go forth with love, Baby D! Go forth with love!

These next two crack me up!! In the one on the left it looks like Baby D is covering his private parts and looking none too pleased I’m photographing him in this way. And, in the next, it’s like he’s laughing and telling me, “Just kidding….we’re pals, you can photograph me.”

Brewster is looking a little put off by the loss of attention he’s been getting since his baby brother joined the party. But, don’t worry little guy…there’s plenty of love to go around!

There’s no better place in the world, then in the arms of the ones you love….snuggled on a super cozy couch.

Our new happy family! Welcome to the world Baby D! So glad you’re here!!

Night night sweet pea!

Jim & Keri….how to properly thank you both for sharing this incredibly special time with me!?! Just no words, really. Andy’s a bit jealous he didn’t get to meet Baby D, but we’re hoping to see you all on Cape Cod next summer, when I suspect much will have changed for your little love nugget! Thank you so much for welcoming me into your beautiful home, for sharing your beautiful son with me and for entrusting me to document his first days of life. It means the world to me…as do both of you! With so much love & hugs, Chris & Andy xo

Julia, John & Family ~ New York City Newborn Photographer

lifestyle family photography, family in bed
Andy & I started out photographing just weddings here on Cape Cod, where we ourselves said, “I do!” nearly 15 years ago. Still can’t believe it’s been that long…feels like just yesterday!

Love has always been the inspiration for us in our work, and getting invited to share in such a special, intimate day with a couple and their family & friends is just the coolest thing! Plus, having experienced disappointment with the photos from our own wedding, getting to document all of the love & celebration for other couples…the way we hoped it would have been done for us….feels like a great big happy do-over.

As many of our brides & grooms have become parents, we’ve been asked to document the next happy milestone in their lives…family. And, we just LOVE it!

Like our wedding photography, we wanted our family photography to be different…to feel REAL, EMOTIONAL and full of LOVE, not those stiff, everybody posed perfectly in matching outfits we’d seen so much of. Instead, we like to capture families as they are….playful, serious, silly, chaotic, quiet, happy, sad, exhausted, energetic, and perfectly imperfect.

Today, this style of photography has a name…lifestyle photography, and while I’m not too keen on labeling what we do, I think it’s a pretty accurate description of how we like to photograph families.

Although both Andy & I photograph our families together, when it comes to newborn photography, which usually involves going to a family’s home and spending a few hours photographing the baby and new parents where they are most comfortable, we’ve found that having two of us there can be a bit too much. And, being that I am obsessed with babies, it seemed only natural (this is code for I insisted) that I be the one to do the baby stuff. And, I think I’ve found my calling, at least that’s how I feel whenever I spend time with this family you’re about to see.

Julia & John have been in our lives for nearly six years. We photographed their bello love session (aka engagement session) and wedding here on Cape Cod and right from the first hello, we were smitten. But, just days before their wedding, we experienced some profound loss and Julia & John were amazing. We loved them before, but that really sealed the deal for me, and they will forever hold a special place in my heart.

So, when they called and asked if I’d photograph their son Brady in 2014, I was overjoyed. I’m not sure they fully appreciated how much sharing those intimate moments with them in their home, with sweet Brady, meant to me. Or maybe they did, because just before Christmas, they asked me to come back, to photograph their newest addition, Baby Chase, who like his big brother, quickly stole my heart.

I arrived in New York City, to their midtown apartment, late on a Friday night. We chatted until way past any of our bedtimes and in the  morning, I began chronicling the life of young parents with a newborn and toddler.

It was interesting for me…I found myself wanting to provide the exact same experience for all of us that was had when it was just John, Julia & Brady, and yet, I didn’t want to take the exact same photos. But, I quickly discovered that life isn’t the same when three becomes four, so I shifted my focus, let things unfold naturally and documented Julia & John’s new life…which is just as beautiful, full of love and perfect imperfection as ever and as any of us could ever hope ours to be.

Although we don’t have little lovebugs of our own, whenever our nieces & nephews sleep over, Andy & I love to take a morning selfie of all of us snuggling in bed. Usually, the kids wake up and run into our room and jump in bed with us. It’s THE BEST! We chat, make silly faces, have tickle fights, and document these moments. There’s something about the stillness of the early morning, when we gather together among the pillows, where nothing else in the world matters, and it fills my heart with such joy. So I thought it would be fun to do this with these lovebugs and document their special morning moment…where the chaos and exhaustion melts away and all there is is love and family.

Looks like someone else loves morning silliness….Sweet Brady, aka Diaper Man, jumps on the bed as he plays with his new friend with the camera. Love this little monkey! Can’t believe how big he’s got since I took photos of him weeks after he was born. Click HERE for a look at that newborn session.

Making your way into the world only a couple of weeks before, and growing by leaps and bounds, takes a lot out of a little guy. Just love how babies sleep all snug in their swaddle.  Love it almost as much as when they wake up and stare at you all sleepy eyed and curious about who this new face is before them. Those eyes…can we talk about it for a second???

Once again, Julia & John offered for me to stay with them prior to the session, which was so nice as it gave us all a chance to catch up the night before, and before the kiddos were awake. But, what made it really sweet, is I got to be there for the start of the day…when the sun just wakes up, the cartoons are on the TV, and babies big and small are in onesies, while momma feeds and chats and meets their needs. These are the moments that seem insignificant, but in reality make life worth living. Look at Brady’s face as he looks at his momma, like she is the bestest, funniest, most amazing person ever. Be still my heart!

It didn’t take long for me & Brady boy to become fast friends once again. He is everything good and lovely and I want to munch on those two fingers he loves to stick in his cute face. Can we talk about the baggy leg of the onesie for a second?? It’s killing me.

This next one just screams SUPERWOMAN to me….Julia is so gorgeous and such a good momma. Feeding Chase, while comforting Brady. Women are amazing, and moms…the most amazing women of all!

I love this next one of Chasey sooooo much!! That smile, that perfect little nose, the wrist chub, gorgeous head of hair, and that delicious baby shoulder fur….it’s too much!!!

I love babies. I love the way they smell, I love their big full bellies and eyes of wonder. I love how predictable they are and how their needs are simple. I love their innocence and purity and I love how I feel when I hold one in my arms. It becomes even more meaningful when the baby I’m holding and posing came from two people whom I adore and care for greatly.

I love me a sleeping baby and their beautiful bits….tiny knuckles and sweet little lips, faint eye lashes and fingernails. Oh, and how they can sleep anywhere, without a care in the world. Heavenly.

And, mommas and their babies….swoon! No one will ever love us quite like our momma. And, being a momma is no easy feat!!!

mom & sleeping baby

While Chase was sleeping, we asked Brady if he would come lie with his baby brother for some photos. I wasn’t sure how this would go down, figuring he wouldn’t want to lie still or be able to cooperate, being so little and full of energy. But, he gave me a good 10 minutes of this and I swear, my heart nearly exploded.

The eyes….I just can’t!

I love that we can take our time during these sessions and let life unfold…sure we make time for pretty photos like those above. And, I do love capturing these images. But, it’s the real moments that truly move me.While modeling seemed to amuse him for a bit, Brady was more interested in checking out his baby brother, and best yet…getting to hold him, like a real big boy.

Being a great big brother is exhausting…sometimes you just need a furry snuggle partner and a little alone time.

Before we all headed out to the park to relish the unseasonably warm late December day, Dad and his main man needed a quick shave…because what 2 year old doesn’t love to make a mess, especially if it involves pretend shaving with his Dadda??

Julia & John, thank you both from the bottom of my heart for opening your home and your hearts to me in such a warm, love-filled way. Thank you for your friendship and for sharing your beautiful family with me! Andy & I love you guys and I feel so lucky to have got to share in these amazing moments with you, as you welcomed your boys into the world….Andy’s a wee jealous! Can’t wait to see you all again, hopefully this summer when you return to Cape Cod. Until then, may these moments and photos bring you as much joy as you all have brought to me! Love you to the moon and back, Chris xoxoxo

Amy, Todd & Family on Cape Cod ~ Falmouth Family Photographers

I’ll never forget Amy & Todd’s wedding. It was early October 2005, our third year shooting weddings, and we were still pretty green. It was one of those freakishly hot days…so hot that I could feel the sweat dripping down my back while crouched in the front of the church, searching for the best angle, while staying as unobtrusive as possible.

But, it wasn’t the heat, or the early nerves that made Amy & Todd’s wedding so memorable.  It’s how happy they were, how much fun they were having on the dance floor with their friends, who, by the way, were amazing and so warm & welcoming to us! I’ll never forget the look on Todd’s mom’s face just before the ceremony or the way Amy’s dad held her tight during their special dance. I’ll never forget staring that kind of love in the face and knowing it would last.

It was in all ways….a perfect day!

Right from our first meeting with Amy  & Todd, we knew we wanted to be in their lives long after their “I dos!” had been said. Happily, the friendship we felt when we first met these two smart, funny, creative,  kind, super cool people has, like their marriage….stood the test of time. We’ve seen them a few times over the years, meeting their crazy cute little boos, Max, Shea & the newest addition…Griffin.

Sadly, like with all of our friends, we don’t get together as often as we’d like. During the summer, when most people have a little extra free time for family & friends, we are at our busiest. But, we finally got together for dinner a couple of months ago and nailed down a date to get these two sweeties and their mini-mes in front of our cameras for a little bello family time.

We met up at one of our favorite spots in Falmouth and had a blast! Perhaps too much fun! It’s so rare we get to see the kids, all we…and they…wanted to do was play. But, we were able to hold them down for a couple of quick seconds…just enough time to snap some fun pics of this lovely family thoroughly enjoying each other!

Say hello to one of our very special families….Todd, Amy, Max, Shea & Griffin. Are they cute or what???

They all have these crazy beautiful blue/greenish eyes that you can easily get lost in. Max is a happy, adventurous, wild little boo who loves Pokemon and could have spent the entire session comparing collections with my big man-child. And, Shea is as smart, fearless and kind-hearted as she is so obviously beautiful. I love this photo of her…she looks like some wild jungle princess.

Oh these eyes……sweet baby Griffin hasn’t known us for as long as his big brother and sister, so wasn’t quite sure what to make of me sticking my big camera in his face…thus the expression. But, he still seemed to be enjoying himself, right along with his siblings.

Of course, nothing beats snuggling with momma!! Love the very natural moment on the left…Shea & Max would have kept climbing these rocks all day if we’d let them.

Because my husband is a big man-child himself, he really has a special way of connecting with kids that makes me fall deeper in love with him every time I witness it. Look at the expression he’s getting from Griff and his beautiful momma!! Just delightful!!!

As a fellow Daddy’s girl, I can totally relate to what sweet snuggly Shea is feeling in this moment and it makes my heart SWOON big!!

Love the dichotomy of these two moments…Griff running wild, and Max just chillin, looking ever the impish little boo that he is.

Mommas and their baby girls….a love like no other!! Be still my momma lovin’ heart!

Max no doubt talking about Pokemon…thus the big toothless grin. And, Griff not minding one little bit being sat on by his big idol of a brother! That wave….can we talk about that for a second??? Seriously?!!

Amy and her babes having a little chat…I think they were also playing patty-cake, but I’m not entirely sure. Either way, I just love the perspective and those EYES!!!

Lovely Shea….enjoying the little one-on-one focused attention from her new friends. Be still my heart!

Love is feeling the sand between your toes and knowing how very much you are loved! This is L.O.V.E.

And so is this!!! My sister has a little boy about the same age as Max and I know how precious these moments are for my sister…for before too long, sweet Max will feel too big to snuggle and smooch his momma. Sniff, sniff.

Max was pretty much done with us at this point…thus the grumpy face. But, I also think he was enjoying making us work for it…and making Andy jump around like a crazy person to get a laugh. As I’ve said before….we’ll do anything for a great photo!!

And, with a cheeky tilt of the head and some more big smiles….it’s a wrap!

Amy & Todd….thank you so much for your continued friendship, for sharing your sweet boos with us, for your patience when we drop off the radar for months…and sometimes years at a time. We love you guys and love spending time with you both and your really AMAZING children!! It’s no wonder they are as cool as they are….they’ve got you guys guiding their way. Thank you for trusting us so many years ago, and putting your trust in us once again! Hope to see you all again real soon!! Until then, we hope these photos serve as happy reminders of this fleeting time in life…big love & hugs to the whole gang!!! C&A xoxoxo
